GHG-Europe Workshop

GHG Fluxes from Peatlands

Date: 21-23 Februar 2011

Location: Freising (near Munich), Germany

Workshop Objectives

  • Site level analysis of vulnerability of peatlands to management and natural variability / changes, in particular: water table, temperature, harvest / biomass export and import, if possible also fertilizer.
  • Preparation for intercomparison of specific peatland models: to what extent can managed peatland sites be modeled: C and N balance, GHGs, water.
  • Data collection for pan-European synthesis and modelling of GHGs in peatlands and their vulnerability to management and natural variability in climate
  • Upscaling and modelling from regional to European scale and of necessary driver data will not be tackled in this workshop, but in a succeeding one.

Expected outcome of the workshop

  • Identification of data sets for pan-European synthesis and modelling of management effects on GHGs in peatlands, and quantification of major management effects supported by measured evidence.
  • Protocol for data collection for a European data base for synthesis and modelling.
  • Protocol for model intercomparison.
  • Special issue, e.g. in Biogeoscience
