GHG-Europe Workshop

Agricultural Management: Quantifying response processes and the vulnerability of C pools and GHG fluxes on agricultural lands in relation to management and site properties

Date: 17-18 February 2011

Location: Paris, France

Workshop Objectives

In croplands, low and high-input grasslands GHG fluxes (CO2, N2O and CH4) are directly influenced by tillage systems (e.g. conservation or conventional tillage) and fertilization practices (e.g. organic or mineral). Site properties are often critical for the magnitude of GHG fluxes in response to C and N inputs. Therefore a main challenge is to disentangle natural from anthropogenic drivers, i.e. ecosystem properties and human pressures.

The workshop is meant to analyze such drivers and determine the impact of agricultural practices on C stocks and GHG budgets from existing long-term paired experiments across Europe. The two-day workshop will feature both invited and contributed talks as well as discussion sessions with the aim of bringing together originators/ providers of data from farmer managed, paired-plot trials on grasslands and croplands.

The goal is to list and discuss available data from WP1 (Quantification of spatial and temporal variability of the main factors driving GHG fluxes). The workshop also encourages partners involved in WP3 (Impact of land management on the regional scale GHG balance of selected, data rich regions in Europe) and WP4 (Attribution of annual to decadal variability of carbon and GHG budgets in managed European ecosystems to human and natural driving processes) to join and thus ensure better project interaction.

The expected outcomes will include a review of the current state of knowledge regarding the potential impact of agricultural management, as well as future research needs.
